Landscaping materials are bought by area but delivered by volume or weight, and the conversion depends on how deep you are spreading. Depth is where most people go wrong: three inches of mulch needs half again as much material as two, and the difference between a bed that suppresses weeds and one that smothers roots is about an inch.

Worth knowing: Order landscaping materials for delivery as close to installation as you can. Sod must be laid within 24 hours, and bulk mulch left on a driveway for a week starts composting.
